Port Stephens Lighthouse 2 - NSW (PB00 4506)

Keywords: Port Stephens Lighthouse 2 (PB00 4506)

One of the most difficult Lighthouses I have photographed so far. Setting out at 3am in the middle of winter from Fingal Bay near Port Stephens. A howing 45 knot wind greeted me as I steppped from my cabin, the sky was dark with ominous clouds threatening to rain, and there were 3.5 metre waves pounding the beach. It was only a 3km walk along the beach but I was terrified... If you have been to see the Port Stephens Lighthouse you will know it is critical to cross the sand spit at low tide to reach the 'island' the light is built on. At high tide the water is waist high and cannot be crossed without extreme danger - several lives have been lost attempting to cross on a rising tide. The water was about calf height so I thought it was now or never. My heart was racing as I ran for my life across the sand spit carrying my cameras, tripod, jacket and everything else. I made it to the island and got this shot which was quite remarkable given the conditions on the day but by the time I returned to the sand spit the water was knee high. You can imagine my fear...
